Megaupload
Non-premium service is available for free, and allows users to upload files of up to 500 MB, previously 250 MB, without registration. The user is then supplied with a unique URL, which locates the file and enables anyone with whom the uploader shares it to download the file. When a file is uploaded, the user is given a URL, in the form of http://megaupload.com/?d= followed by an 8 digit alpha-numeric code. The files can only be found upon entering this URL, as in order to protect privacy of uploaders megaupload does not feature a search option. Free downloading entails joining a queue for between 30 seconds and several hours, depending on demand, the number of recent downloads from that IP address and the location of the downloader. Registration and payment bring several perks such as upload of larger files, download of several files simultaneously, queue-skipping, and the facility to interrupt and re-start download..

RapidShare
It is a free service, and any user can upload files of up to 100 MB without registration. The user is then supplied with a unique URL, which locates the file and enables anyone with whom the uploader shares it to download the file. Free downloaders are forced to wait 20 seconds and about 10 seconds more for each 10 MB (however, with files under 500 KB there is no waiting). As of 9/17/2006, non-premium members are required to wait a total of 170 seconds for the largest files. Registration and payment allow additional benefits such as download of several files simultaneously, queue-skipping, and the facility to interrupt and re-start download. Premium members also have the option of extending their membership through a rewards program by accumulating Rapidshare points. However, even Premium users have no way to search the server for content (all files have to be downloaded by following a given URL). Rapidshare is well-known for its pro-active role in battling warez (illegally shared files, such as movies and games). Rapidshare AG is fully aware of illegal files being uploaded and deletes all files that are reported.

Glossary:

* One-click hosting describes web services that allow any internet users to easily upload any type of file from their hard drive onto the one-click hoster's server free of charge to have it hosted.

Most such services simply return a short URL which can be given to other people, who can then fetch the file later on. As of 2005 there has been a big boom in providing such services, so a lot of providers start up and fail soon after again.

* A file hosting service or online file storage service is an Internet hosting service specifically designed to host static content, typically large files that are not web pages. Typically they allow web and FTP access. They can be optimized for serving many users (as is implied by the term "hosting") or be optimized for single-user storage (as is implied by the term "storage"). Related services are virtual storage and remote backup.
